April is Poetry Month. This brings many of us to think about a focus on poetry. It’s a perfect time for it too, since  poetry seems to offer a much needed break from the standardized testing of March and May. And more importantly there is much readers and writers can learn from poems!

Poets learn how to use words in different ways, and to see the world around them through a variety of lenses. They learn to listen to the rhythm of words and hear the rhyme. Readers of poetry learn to see the world as the poet does, have the fun of word play and feel the words roll off their tongue. Students of all ages love poetry when they are given opportunities to explore it.
